Texas Longhorns lunch bento

The Texas Longhorns are the sports teams for the University of Texas UT based here in Austin.

So when I received this burnt orange monbento bento box. The first thing I though was I have to do a Longhorns lunch.

I wanted to do typical Texas fare for the lunch so i decided rice and chili. I also wanted something quick to whip up so rice (uncle bens minute rice)with southwest chili (hormel) Tostitos multigrain scoops, guacamole and multi colored tomatoes from the local farmers market. Mexican mixed shredded cheese and of course the longhorn symbol.

Texas Longhorns Lunch Bento
The logo of the longhorns is the longhorn cow. So I cut this out from cheese using a parchment paper template and an exacto knife.

The great thing about the monbento box is it can be heated in the microwave. It has a vent in each layers lid. So I kept one layer with the items I wanted to heat and the other for the cold items.

Unlike many bento boxes this one is sized generously for an adult portion I was very full after this.

You can use just one section at a time if needed and it comes with 1 divider (I used a second extra one)

Why not whip up a longhorns lunch for the UT fan in your life.

 Not shown my trusty spork.

Monbento boxes are available form Amazon or direct from monbento they are having a sale in Wednesday so it's a great time to get one.

The Clangers Bento Lunch

The Clangers was one of my favorite programs growing up in the UK it was originally shown  1969 -1972 and repeated throughout the 70s. Its a classic stop motion series with knitted pink moon mice who communicate by whistling.

The Clangers family consist of Major Clanger, Mother Clanger, Small Clanger and Tiny Clanger (and a couple of un-named Clangers)

Also on their little blue moon are other creatures such as the soup dragon who provides the Clangers with green soup and the Froglets who live in a top hat.

So when deciding what to try in my PlanetBox Rover Lunchbox. These little space creatures seemed perfect

So here is the lunch with a couple of friends the Soup dragon (makes the gurgling sounds) and Mother Clanger (she whistles)

Danger mouse Bento

Danger Mouse was one of my favorite cartoons in England.

I even bought US versions of them to watch.

So here is a tribute in cheese and ham!

Dangermouse Bento

DM: Good grief Penfold! I've been turned in to a bento!

Penfold: Crikey D.M doesn't that hurt, Chief?

DM:  No, didn't feel a thing!

Penfold: Oh, Crumbs!

For those individuals unfortunately enough not to see the show its kind of like comedy James Bond, if James Bond was a Cartoon mouse with a mole for a sidekick and the bad guy is a Toad.

Danger mouse is cute from mozarella cheese, ham, cheddar, cherry and Nori. on a sandwich with some cherries

The other side is Broccoli,  Blueberries, Grapes, Strawberries, Tomatoes and a Babybel cheese with Cut out letters for the Logo.

All served in a Monbento box available form Amazon or from Monbento see link in side bar.

Ladybug steam cakes

Ladybug ladybird steam cakes. I have been playing with the electric steamer I got for my birthday.

There are so many things you can do with a steamer!

After trying a few savory things I am now trying sweet.

I saw some lovely steam cakes by bentomonsters and went looking for recipes and how to. I found a recipe at mimibakery

I had some of the ingredients to hand but not all so I improvised recipe below.

Ladybug Steam cakes
Recipe:

2 cups flour
1 cup sugar granulated because that's what I had
150ml skimmed milk regular milk is good but I didn't have any
3 eggs straight from fridge
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk

Directions:

Mix everything together on medium speed in mixer for 5 minutes.

Set aside 3 tablespoons color brown with food coloring put in a Wilton Squeeze Bottle or piping bag.

Set aside 1 tablespoon in a Wilton squeezy bottle or small piping bag

Color the of the mix red.

Fill silicone Cupcake cases about 2/3 full. (I am not sure how regular paper cupcake cases would hold up to steamer.)

Then draw a cross with the brown and fill half in.

Draw three dots each side.

Dot large dots of plain for eyes and then a small dot of brown.

Pop any big air bubbles with a tooth pick.

Gently place in steamer make sure they do not touch the sides.

Steam for about 16 to 18 minutes.

It will depend on your steamer my first batch came out gooey in the middle. They will rise nicely but need to steam a bit longer to set.

Best eaten warm and fresh.

I am going to try different designs so experiment and have fun.
